BASEBALL

Small-school spectacular

It will be as good as it gets in the small-school ranks today in Limon. Defending Class 2A and preseason No. 1 Limon hosts Class 1A defending and preseason No. 1 Stratton at 4 p.m.

Jason Brown and Trent Dohe fuel a potent Badgers lineup that split a doubleheader with No. 10 Las Animas last Friday. For the visiting Eagles, whose coach, Rod Thompson, is still trying to fill their schedule, this will be Game No. 1.

Also today, a dandy in the Centennial League has Class 5A preseason No. 1 Cherry Creek, off to 5-1 start, at home to face No. 6 Cherokee Trail at 4:15.

TRACK AND FIELD

Speaking French

For the next two Saturdays at Rocky Mountain’s J. Ray French Field, many of the state’s best will lace ’em up. This Saturday is the Runners Roost of Fort Collins meet, followed by the Foot of the Rockies meet the following weekend.

Also on deck across the state this Saturday are Roosevelt’s Randall Hess Invitation and Grand Junction’s Mickey Dunn Invitational. Other meets of interest will be held in Center, Greeley, Hotchkiss, Lamar and Brighton.

Big game at DU

The University of Denver’s Peter Barton Stadium is well worth the price of admission, but throw in a decent game and you are likely to get more than your money’s worth. On Saturday at 4 p.m., Cherokee Trail, which is off to an impressive 5-1 start, including a big 10-9 victory over highly regarded Chaparral, hosts Columbine (2-2).

Defending state champion Cherry Creek, which handed Cherokee Trail its only loss, 15-7 on Monday, hits the road for a spring-break trip that has Illinois Loyola Academy Ramblers first up Saturday. Two more games against New York teams will have the Bruins ready when they return in April to face Arapahoe and Kent Denver.

GIRLS SOCCER

Light schedule

You have to look hard to find a matchup worth the drive. With many teams across the state on spring break, we found one to fancy. Smoky Hill, the Class 5A preseason No. 5, and standout Anna Willis, who netted a goal in the Buffaloes’ 3-2 victory over Broomfield two weeks ago, will be at Regis Jesuit tonight at 7 p.m. The Raiders will face their second ranked opponent of the season in a bid to improve to 3-2. Regis Jesuit’s other ranked foe was No. 9 Douglas County, which beat the Raiders 3-1.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Centaurus is on a roll

OK, so it’s early, but coach Genny Horning’s Centaurus team is off to a 2-0 start, which includes an impressive 13-6 victory over Regis Jesuit. To say the Warriors are hitting the meat of their schedule is quite the understatement. On Tuesday, their daunting gauntlet begins when they host Heritage/Littleton’s Gryphons. Their first three games in April are against Air Academy (3-0), Cherry Creek (2-0) and Chatfield (4-0).
