DENVER—Flags on Colorado state buildings are flying at half-staff in honor of a Marine who was killed in Afghanistan.

Gov. John Hickenlooper ordered flags lowered on Friday as funeral services were held for 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Christopher S. Meis of Bennett.

Meis was a machine gunner with the 2nd Marine Division from Camp Lejeune, N.C.

He was fatally shot March 17 when his unit came under fire while on a mission in southern Afghanistan.

Meis joined the Marines in January 2010. He deployed to Afghanistan in January 2011 and was promoted to lance corporal three weeks before he was killed.
