CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Phillies shut down closer Brad Lidge on Friday with shoulder soreness and said he is likely to begin the season on the disabled list.

The 34-year-old right- hander made his first appearance in nearly two weeks Thursday. He came on with two outs in the ninth inning against the Twins but gave up a home run and back-to- back walks.

Beimel behind schedule

BRADENTON, Fla. — Pittsburgh left-hander Joe Beimel won’t be ready for opening day, leaving the Pirates without their main offseason bullpen acquisition.

Beimel, who was 1-2 with a 3.40 ERA for the Rockies last season, has been hampered much of spring training by injuries to his forearm and elbow.

• Reds right-hander Homer Bailey will open the season on the disabled list because of a shoulder problem.

• Right-hander Josh Tomlin has earned the final spot in the Indians’ rotation.

• The White Sox named rookie Brent Morel their starting third baseman.
