Daddy’s away. But he’ll be home soon.

For nine years, the bronze sculpture “Daddy’s Home,” a tribute to Frederick’s miners, has been part of the Crist Park landscape. Now the father-and-son figure at the heart of the sculpture is down for repairs.

The sculpture depicts a man returning from the mines to the welcome of his wife, children and dog. As part of the piece, the miner’s son reaches out for Dad’s lunch pail — and that’s where the problem starts.

“Over time, these figures move a little from side to side,” said Laura Brown, chairwoman of the Frederick Arts Commission. “Since they’re both joined at the pail handle, that’s where the torque is applied — and that’s where the handle breaks.”

It broke late last year, the second time that has happened since the sculpture went up in 2002.
