GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—High winds have caused havoc in Grand Junction, and one witness reports seeing a tornado-like wind funnel flip over a boat nearly 40 feet long in a storage yard.

Joe Russo, the caretaker at All Storage, told the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel the winds that hit Thursday also lifted sections of a prefabricated fence 30 feet off the ground.

Jim Daniels, a National Weather Service meteorologist, says he hadn’t received any similar reports, but he says Russo may have seen a cold-air funnel, which can occur when a cold front moves in quickly and the atmosphere is unstable.

Daniels says gusts up to 49 mph were reported at the Grand Junction airport Thursday.
