DENVER—The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment is trying to reach thousands of people who received incorrect tax statements of how much they received in unemployment benefits.

Some could be in line for a larger tax refund.

The department says it sent about 11,000 incorrect 1099-G statements, which list unemployment benefits that are taxable as income. The Denver Post reports that a heavy crush of claims last year and multiple tiers of extended federal benefits tripped up manual calculations the state made for some recipients.

The department says the average error is about $300. It says most of the errors over-reported income, which, once corrected, could result in a larger tax refund.

The department is mailing amended forms and is trying to call claimants.
