The Colorado Mammoth, returning to action after a three-week break in the schedule, topped the Boston Blazers 9-8 in overtime Saturday at the Pepsi Center. It was Colorado’s first home win of the season after losing the first five. The Mammoth improved to 2-8 on the season, while Boston dropped to 6-7.
Pioneers notch lacrosse win.
The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team defeated Air Force 14-7 at sold-out Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Pioneers (6-2, 2-0 Eastern College Athletic Conference) won their third in a row.
Pioneers junior Mark Matthews and sophomore Chase Carraro had three goals apiece. The Falcons (2-6, 0-1) were led by Kyle Cassady’s two goals. Denver outshot AFA 39-32.
Denver travels to Hobart and Air Force heads to Macon, Ga., to take on Mercer in ECAC games scheduled for Saturday.
Wyoming diver places 12th.
Wyoming senior diver Mark Murdock earned honorable mention All-America honors with a 12th-place finish (351.20) on the platform during the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships in Minneapolis.
Bears fall in doubleheader.
The Northern Colorado baseball team had the tying run on in both games of a doubleheader against Southern Utah but was unable to get the runs home, falling 6-3 and 3-2.
Relievers Cameron Tallman, Chris Carlberg and Nate Steinmetz combined to give up just six hits for UNC (2-15), walking just one and striking out four on the afternoon.
• Sophomore right-hander Sean Carley allowed six hits in a complete game, but Air Force (11-4, 0-2) was held to three hits in a 2-1 loss to Utah in Mountain West Conference action at Salt Lake City.
Tesone ties Metro record.
Jennessa Tesone hit two home runs to tie the Metro State career record at 47 in a 5-1 softball victory over New Mexico Highlands. Tara Mickelson set the record last season. Metro won the nightcap 9-0.
CU’s Pixler establishes season’s best time.
University of Colorado graduate student Jessica Pixler recorded the fastest time (15:25.58) in the world this season in the women’s 5,000-meter run at the Stanford Invitational late Friday.
