KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Houston Astros shortstop Clint Barmes has a broken left hand, the result of getting hit by a pitch, and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Barmes had X-rays on Saturday morning that revealed the injury. He was hit just above the wrist by a pitch from the Yankees’ Ivan Nova in Friday night’s exhibition game in Tampa, Fla.

Tommy Manzella was called back up from the Triple-A roster just two days after being sent down. He was the Astros’ starting shortstop on opening day last season.

“You start feeling sorry for yourself, then all you have to do is look at what’s happened in other people’s camps and you realize that’s why you try to build as much depth as you can,” general manager Ed Wade said. “And that’s why every GM in the game, when you get to the last 10 days of spring training, you start to hold your breath and hope that things like this don’t occur.”

Nova and Garcia win rotation spots.

The Yankees completed their rotation, tabbing Nova and Freddy Garcia as starters and putting Bartolo Colon in the bullpen.

Nova and Garcia will join CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Phil Hughes in the rotation, manager Joe Girardi said.

Nova went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 10 games, including seven starts, for the Yankees last season. The right-hander went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five exhibition games, including four starts.

Cubs cut Silva.

Chicago right-hander Carlos Silva will not be on the team’s 25-man roster when the season starts Friday.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry announced that Andrew Cashner will be the club’s fifth starter, leaving Silva without a spot.

If Silva opts to be released, the Cubs are on the hook for his $11.5 million salary this season.
