Greenwood Village-based Molycorp Inc. and a federal energy lab in Iowa have agreed to collaborate on developing commercial-grade, high-strength magnets using rare earth metals.
The aim is to use elements found at Molycorp’s Mountain Pass mine in California to make magnets with properties similar to ones available now. However, the Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory would develop less-expensive techniques that use less energy than current methods.
