301 N. Union Ave., Pueblo, 719-583-8631,

Why go now: Headquartered at El Pueblo History Museum in Pueblo, Frontier Pathways has just launched Southern Colorado Adventure Tours, guided bus tours along the 103-mile scenic byway that focus on different time periods and cultural aspects of the Wet Mountain and Greenhorn valleys, with views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains along the way. Tour options include “Rails & Tales,” “Cowboys and Cowgirls of Custer County” and “What Is Wild in the West.” All-day trips run about eight hours, and overnight, five-hour youth and custom tours are also available. Costs start at $48 (youth), $80 (all-day adult) and $150 (overnight trips).

Stay: The family-friendly Best Western Eagleridge & Suites (4727 N. Elizabeth St., 719-543-4644, ) is newer and a notch above most chain links. What really sets this one apart: the complimentary hot breakfasts, which are prepared to order — including omelettes and waffles — by the staff. Free Wi-Fi, and there’s a microwave, mini- fridge and flat-screen TV in every room. Indoor pool, and pets are welcome.

Dine: Tony’s Chop House (2930 N. Elizabeth St., 719-583-1822) and the longtime Pueblo favorite Rosario’s Restaurant have become one, with both menus available. That means one of you can order the heavenly gnocchi with sausage, and the other can order the steak and shrimp, and everybody’s happy — especially if you finish with the almond brittle dessert, with house- made brittle topped with gelato and mascarpone mousse.
