A toddler wandering alone on a dark Denver street near Manual High School on Thursday morning will stay in the care of Adams County Social Services, likely until Monday, police said.

The child was found around 6 a.m. by a person walking a dog in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood. Police went door to door until they found the girl’s babysitter, who was described as a relative, in the 2900 block of Williams Street.

The child had apparently left through an unlocked door. There is a park with a playground across the street from Manual.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the child, who was dressed in blue jeans and a lightweight jacket, will remain in protective custody until her mother and caregiver can be interviewed by detectives. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
