The inaugural Quiznos Pro Challenge cycling race continues to gain momentum like a downhill ride off Vail Pass.
The latest coup came Friday when sources confirmed that the final stage of the Aug. 22-28 race will air live on NBC. The final stage is scheduled to start in Golden and finish in downtown Denver.
The 600-mile race already had secured a deal to be shown the entire week on Versus, which is the top cycling network in the world. The seven-stage race will start in Colorado Springs, then head west into the mountains.
Gov. John Hickenlooper and a group of race officials have scheduled a news conference Tuesday morning on the steps of the state Capitol to announce the NBC deal.
Sources say NBC, which owns Versus, wants to get more involved in cycling and sought to televise more of the Quiznos race, which brings pro cycling back to Colorado for the first time since the Coors Classic ended in 1988.
