The body of a person discovered crammed into a suitcase and dumped in a field near a Denver park is that of a young man or teenager, police say.

The body, which has not yet been identified, also was described as being white or Hispanic, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

Police consider the case a death investigation and not necessarily a homicide, Jackson said.

He said there were no obvious signs of violence.

Jackson said the circumstances are suspicious, but until the Denver Medical Examiner’s Office completes an autopsy and conclusively determines the cause of death, it would be unwise to speculate about what happened.

Two boys searching for scrap metal by Ruby Hill Park discovered the suitcase early Friday afternoon. They ran to a nearby apartment complex, where they told several friends, who raced over to see the body for themselves before alerting a nearby public works crew that called police.

Jackson said the body was partly buried and that police were scouring missing person’s reports to see if any match it.

It could take several days to identify the body, he said.
