Colorado’s inaugural Quiznos Pro Challenge has a new name — the USA Pro Cycling Challenge — but the voices who will broadcast it around the world in late August will be familiar to cycling fans.

Race co-chairman Shawn Hunter confirmed after a news conference Tuesday that legendary announcers Paul Sherwen and Phil Liggett will broadcast the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

Sherwen has been involved in 27 Tours de France — seven as a cyclist and 20 as a broadcaster. Liggett has done every Tour de France since 1973. The two will broadcast the race on Versus, the top cycling network in the world, Aug. 22-27, and on NBC for the final stage, Aug. 28.

The two networks will provide 25 hours of coverage. While Quiznos remains a major sponsor, the name change is based on creating a global brand for the race. Gov. John Hickenlooper said he estimates the race will generate more than $100 million for the state’s economy.

Hunter said he still has six team slots to fill and is in the process of meeting with the towns hosting starts and finishes during the race. John Henderson, The Denver Post

CU’s Thornton OK.

Colorado sophomore tight end DaVaughn Thornton watched practice Tuesday from the sideline, a day after he was taken to a hospital for precautionary tests, which came back negative.

“He’s fine. He’ll do some stuff (at the next practice) Thursday, and then I’ll decide if we’ll do anything with him on Saturday. He wants to play,” CU coach Jon Embree said. Natalie Meisler, The Denver Post

Eagles take series lead.

Andrew Penner stopped 28 shots to shut out host Quad City 2-0 and register the ninth playoff shutout in Colorado Eagles history. The Eagles hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
