Getting your player ready...

April 20 is the target date for Colorado sophomore Alec Burks to decide whether to enter the 2011 NBA draft, the 6-foot-6 sophomore said Wednesday.

Burks said the possibility of a lockout by NBA owners next season will have no bearing on his decision.

“Whatever I decide to do is not going to have anything to do with the lockout,” he said.

Also, Burks said he will hire an agent if he decides to declare for the draft. Eligible players have until April 24 to do so. Those who do not hire an agent can withdraw by May 8 to retain their amateur eligibility.

“I feel like if I go in, I’m going in with my whole foot in the door and not a half a foot,” Burks said of not merely testing the waters. “I feel if I have the confidence to make the decision for the NBA, I’ll be all in.”

Rams’ Wiltz to leave hoops team.

Moe Wiltz, a
point guard who averaged 2.9 points in 12 games, was
granted his scholarship release by Colorado State basketball
coach Tim Miles.

Wiltz, a recruit from Texas who brought more
speed to the backcourt, will be able to transfer anywhere.

“We support Maurice. He is a great kid from a great
family. I know that he wants to play more and we intend
to help him in any way that we can,” Miles said.

Wiltz rarely got off the bench late in the season
when the guard position was thinned by injuries. It became
apparent he didn’t have much of a future with
the program.

Wyoming’s Shyatt hires two.

New Wyoming basketball coach Larry Shyatt hired Scott Duncan as associate head coach and Jeremy Shyatt as an assistant coach.

Duncan comes to Wyoming from UCLA, where he was an assistant coach the last four seasons. Duncan was an assistant coach at Wyoming under Shyatt during the 1997-98 season. Jeremy Shyatt is the oldest son of Larry Shyatt and comes to Wyoming after being an assistant at North Florida the past two seasons.

VanDerveer slated for Metro dinner.

Stanford women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer, who Tuesday was named to the Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2011 class and Wednesday was named the Naismith women’s coach of the year, will be the keynote speaker at Metro State’s annual scholarship dinner April 26.

“We are so happy Tara is able to join us for our event,” Metro State athletic director Joan McDermott said in a release. “This is a great opportunity to generate support for our athletic scholarship program and raise awareness for the 2012 Women’s Final Four, which takes place in Denver.”

The dinner will take place at the Brown Palace in Denver. Information can be found online at .
