Three weeks before Denver’s municipal elections, Director of Elections Michael Scarpello left the city Monday to become the registrar of voters in San Bernardino County, Calif.
However, he will return later this month to help see through the city’s elections, including the mayoral and City Council races.
“San Bernardino required me to take the job prior to the elections, but they’ve been very generous in allowing me to work with our staff to monitor the tasks revolving around the (May 3) elections,” said Scarpello, whom Denver hired in 2007.
Scarpello said the job in Southern California, and the chance to work in a much larger jurisdiction (the county has more than 2 million residents), was too good to pass up; even so, he added that it will be tough to leave Colorado. Anthony Cotton, The Denver Post
