SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt — Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was abruptly hospitalized Tuesday for heart problems during an investigation over allegations of corruption and violence against protesters, reported state TV. In a sign that his ailment might not be serious, however, Justice Minister Mohammed el-Guindi said the former president was being questioned in the hospital.
Mubarak, 82, was deposed Feb. 11 after 18 days of popular protests and has been under house arrest.
Early today, Egyptian prosecutors ordered the detention of Mubarak and his powerful sons as their roles in violence against protesters and corruption allegations are investigated, said a police general.
Gamal Mubarak, the younger son, was a top official in the ruling party and was widely seen as being groomed to succeed his father.
Gamal’s businessman brother, Alaa, also was detained.
