Comcast is offering an ultra-fast Internet service that’s about twice as fast as its previous top residential speeds.

The new tier, called Extreme 105, is available to more than 40 million homes in major markets such as Denver, San Francisco, Seattle and others.

The service offers download speeds of up to 105 megabits per second and is available to new or existing customers at an introductory rate of $105 per month for 12 months as part of a bundle of Internet, television and phone service.

The majority of Comcast customers in Colorado subscribe to broadband service that ranges from 6 Mbps to 12 Mbps.

Downloading a high-definition movie with Extreme 105 would take about five minutes, compared with 1 1/2 hours on 6 Mbps service, Comcast said.

Google’s ultra-high-speed broadband service, expected to launch in Kansas City, Kan., in 2012, will offer download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second — about 10 times faster than Extreme 105. Extreme 105 features upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps.
