Police arrested a Lakewood woman and her boyfriend on suspicion of child abuse in the death of her 3-year-old boy.
Just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, Lakewood police were called to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital and Children’s Hospital after 3-year-old Elijah Carpenter was admitted with life threatening injuries, according to a news release from police.
The boy died from his injuries around midnight last night. Details about his injuries have not been released.
Denver police originally responded to the call but notified Lakewood police when it was determined that the incident occurred in Lakewood at the Mesa Motor Lodge, 5600 W. Colfax Ave.
The child had been staying there with his mother and her boyfriend, police said. The boy’s mother Kristina Marie Carpenter, 25, took the toddler to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital before he was transferred to Children’s Hospital.
Carpenter and her boyfriend Lysander Benjamin Harvey, 21, were arrested yesterday when police discovered that they boy’s injuries did not match the story Harvey told them.
The two were arrested on charges of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, and police will ask the District Attorney’ Office to change the charges following the boy’s death.
Carpenter and Harvey are being held at the Jefferson County Jail.
