The write-in race to fill Carla Madison’s District 8 Denver City Council seat, which is now 24 candidates deep, received some added publicity Thursday, with former Mayor Wellington Webb’s endorsement of local youth advocate Albus Brooks.

After a moment of silence for Madison, who died April 5 from colon cancer, Webb noted Brooks’ youthful abilities before dozens of supporters who congregated in the Whittier neighborhood.

“Albus represents the future of District 8,” said Webb, who is a resident of the district, which includes downtown Denver, West Park Hill and Five Points.

“He’s dedicated and tried endlessly to make a difference in young people’s lives. He has the youth, energy and ability to bring all the diverse aspects of the district together.”

Touting improvements to economic development, public safety and education, Brooks, the director of the Issachar Center for Urban Leadership, said he would seek to unify District 8.

According to the city Elections Division website, as of Thursday the candidates who have filed write-in paperwork for the District 8 election are, alphabetically:

Wil Alston, Brooks, Adam Crowley, Steven Dewberry, Warren Edson, Rene I. Farkass, Tony Ferrufino, Paul Noel Fiorino, Jake Fleck, Thomas Gilhooly, Breck Grover, Nita (Dwinita) Henry, Mark Iannucci, Thomas Henry Juniel, Angela Knepell, Mark G. Martinez, Owetta R. McNeil, Tom Morris, Robert Price, Tom Rutherford, Dan Stafford, Darrell B. Watson, Paul Weiss (Madison’s husband) and Susan Whitehurst.
