CLEVELAND — University of Denver junior Brianna Springer finished 17th in the all-around competition and freshman Jorie Hall was 35th on the balance beam at the 2011 NCAA women’s gymnastics championships on Friday.
Springer finished with a 38.325 in the all-around, scoring a 9.775 on vault, 9.675 on beam, 9.600 on floor and 9.275 on bars. Springer, who qualified with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA North Central Regionals on April 2, finished 11th in last year’s NCAAs.
In her first NCAA championship appearance, Hall scored a 9.575 on balance beam. Hall qualified for the beam competition by earning a 9.900 to share the event title at the regionals.
Overall, UCLA grabbed the last qualifying spot in Friday morning’s preliminary round, keeping alive its quest for a second straight national title.
Stanford wins men’s title.
Alex Buscaglia tied for first in the last event — the vault — in Columbus, Ohio, to lead the Stanford men to their fifth NCAA title and the school’s 100th national championship in all sports.
Sam Mikulak won the all-around title, giving Michigan that distinction for the second year in a row. Teammate Chris Cameron won it in 2010.
The Cardinal totaled 363.450 points to hold off top-ranked Oklahoma, which had 361.600.
