Lowdown: The 13-year-old Bed and Breakfast Association of Rome offers 120 accommodations — plus, the Web page is in English. It has links to B&B accommodations in the rest of Italy.

Lowdown: Dubbed “your passport to the black experience,” and created by American Airlines, it covers dozens of U.S. and international cities and details attractions, black history and travel tips. The site has a travel forum and booking engine too. It’s a good place to start — but you won’t find mention of other airlines or travel providers, so consult other sources as well when booking.

Lowdown: It’s a new spinoff site by the respected Independent Traveler company that focuses on all kinds of family vacation deals, trips and advice — not just cruises. Features reviews.

Lowdown: Last-minute deals on river cruises around the world. Many of the deals include free air travel, hotels and tours. Check under “special offers.”

Lowdown: Brand new site with info on 2,200 college campus tours, geared to high- schoolers who are visiting potential colleges. Also has a college tour planner. Worth checking out, although it’s not yet comprehensive.
