Sophomore-to-be quarterback Kain Colter was the leading rusher in Northwestern’s spring football game Saturday in Evanston, Ill., which was a nice follow-up for the Cherry Creek High School graduate after his performance against Texas Tech in the TicketCity Bowl last season.
Colter gained 42 yards on four carries, including a 27-yard touchdown run, and completed 5-of-10 passes for 35 yards. In the Wildcats’ 45-38 loss to Texas Tech in Dallas on Jan. 1, Colter had 18 carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 32-yard reception against the Red Raiders.
Northwestern, coming off a 7-6 season, plays its 2011 opener Sept. 3 at Boston College.
Eighth-inning rally sparks Sky Sox.
The host Reno Aces took a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning of a Pacific Coast League baseball game against Colorado Springs, but the Sky Sox scored six runs in the eighth inning on its way to an 8-5 win Sunday. It was the Aces’ first home loss of the season and the Sky Sox’s first win of the series.
The Sky Sox’s Jim Miller (1-0) earned the win, tossing one scoreless inning in relief of starter John Maine, who went six innings, allowing three runs.
Thorne’s grand slam powers AFA.
Air Force’s Matt Thorne hit a grand slam in the seventh inning as the Falcons (14-22) earned an 8-7 win over host Sacramento State (12-25).
Starting pitcher Sean Carley pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Falcons, striking out four. Alex Baker relieved Carley and picked up his second win of the season. Closer Stephen Colangelo pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to earn his fifth save of the season. Sophomore Alex Bast went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and two runs scored.
The Falcons return home to face Northern Colorado on Tuesday.
• Northern Colorado (7-26, 4-4 Great West Conference) fell 5-3 to host Houston Baptist, and the Bears settled for a split in the four-game weekend series.
Adams State sweeps RMAC foe.
Freshman Kristen Payne of Adams State hit a grand slam in the first game of a doubleheader as the Grizzlies (25-20, 17-15 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) took two softball games from Fort Lewis (11-22, 10-18 RMAC), 11-1 and 13-5.
