DENVER—Denver Post editorial cartoonist Mike Keefe has won a Pulitzer Prize.
Keefe was named the winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning Monday. The judges said his cartoons employ a loose, expressive style to send strong, witty messages.
Keefe told The Denver Post he was “gobsmacked” to win and said that in recent years the Pulitzer had gone to “much younger folks, who are newer in the business.”
Keefe is a former math instructor at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He joined the newspaper in 1975.
Denver Post Editor Gregory L. Moore serves on the Pulitzer jury but recuses himself in categories in which his newspaper is nominated.
Keefe’s Pulitzer is the newspaper’s seventh. Post photographer Craig F. Walker won last year for feature photography.
