While the metro region waits out a chance of showers and thunderstorms this evening, strong Pacific moisture is delivering a winter blow in the high country, the National Weather Service said.
Northwest Colorado is under a winter storm warning until noon Tuesday. The Park, Northern Gore and Rabbit Ears ranges are expected to get 8 to 16 inches of snow tonight, with 40 mph wind gusts at timberline, forecaster said.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until noon Tuesday for areas above 9,000 feet in much of Boulder, Grand, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Park and Summit counties.
Areas could pick up 6 to 12 inches of snow and rain, accompanied by wind gusts up to 40 mph, forecasters said.
In Denver, the chance of rain tonight is 60 percent with a possibility of a thunderstorm before midnight.
Rain chances in the city are 30 percent tomorrow and 20 percent Wednesday, forecasters said.
