Students are returning to Stony Creek Elementary School in Littleton after a bathroom stop prompted an evacuation around 1 p.m. today.
People at the school became concerned after a young man walked into the building to use the restroom, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s spokesman Mark Techmeyer.
“There was some confusion that he had left a backpack behind. He had not,” Techmeyer said. “There were thoughts that he had been in the bathroom and that ceiling tiles had been moved. They had not.”
He said previous reports that the young man had rushed past adults at the school doors were a misunderstanding, and that there is no criminal investigation.
“The guy checked out just fine,” Techmeyer said. “Though in this day and age, it was probably not the wisest move.”
Twenty five other schools in the area were placed on lock out for about 20 minutes at the request of law enforcement while the Stony Creek incident was investigated, Jefferson County School District spokeswoman Melissa Reeves said.
The lock out – where doors to schools are locked but students continue business as usual inside – was lifted around 1:45 p.m., Reeves said.
