The state Board of Education has narrowed the field of candidates for education commissioner to two.

The state board this afternoon voted to name interim commissioner Robert Hammond and Aurora Public Schools Superintendent John Barry as finalists for the job, which last paid $223,680 per year.

The board now has 14 days to designate a final candidate.

Six people were interviewed by the board in closed-door interviews last week. The board would not say who those job-seekers were.

Board chairman Bob Schaffer said a salary has not been set.

The job came open last fall, when Dwight Jones left the post to become superintendent of schools in Las Vegas.
