A man has been arrested in La Plata County on suspicion of murder after he called in to report the death of a man who had been staying as a house guest on Wednesday.
At about 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call from the home of Justin Wiese, about 10 miles north of Durango.
Wiese had called 911 to report finding the body of 42-year-old Darrick Zuber, a house guest, on the dining room floor. Firearms and other items were taken from Wiese’s home as possible evidence.
An autopsy conducted on Thursday found that Zuber died from significant trauma due to a single gunshot wound.
The point at which a bullet entered Zuber’s body was not consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. No other details were released about the nature of his fatal injury.
Wiese, 35 was arrested late Friday afternoon when he turned himself in shortly after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
He is being held on charges of 2nd degree murder, a class 2 felony, and tampering with evidence, a class 6 felony. Bond was set at $500,000.
Anyone who may have information related to Zuber’s death is asked to contact La Plata County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Cody Story at 970-382-7020.
