Gov. John Hickenlooper has named Penfield Tate to the Colorado State University system Board of Governors.

The appointment requires confirmation by the state Senate.

Tate is a CSU graduate and served on the advisory committee that recommended Joe Blake as chancellor of the university system two years ago. He is a former state senator who served on the Joint Budget Committee that is responsible for managing state budget and funding issues for K-12 and higher education.

He is now a shareholder in the Denver office of Greenberg Traurig law firm.

“Penfield’s legislative and JBC experience is a significant asset to the board,” Blake said in a news release. “The CSU System campuses, like our state, continue to face unique challenges in meeting the higher educational needs of our students. His understanding of the higher education budgeting process will be valuable as we seek greater operational efficiencies and create a more financially sustainable future for CSU. Penfield’s passion for education will help reinforce public higher education’s ongoing contributions to this state.”

The appointment is for a four-year term that expires Dec. 31, 2014. The Board of Governors oversees CSU campuses in Fort Collins and Pueblo and the CSU-Global campus.
