Lakewood Police are asking the public’s help in locating a man who is alleged to have shot a 72-year-old woman while robbing her home.

Police are looking for Melvin Nelson, 60, who left the woman’s home in the 100 block of South Ammons St. before police arrived on Saturday.

The woman was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Police believe Nelson, who goes by the name “Catfish,” knows the woman.

He is driving a stolen 2000 Ford Explorer, with Colorado license plate 501PYD and may be heading to Craig, said Lakewood Det. Ryan McKone.

“He has a very extensive criminal history and is now on bond for felon in possession of a fire arm and drug possession. He has access to firearms and is not afraid to use them,” McKone said.

Nelson, who police called “armed and dangerous,” has no current address but is known to frequent the Colfax corridor.

Anyone with information about Nelson can call the Lakewood Police Department at (303)987-7111. Police consider Nelson armed and dangerous and warn residents not to contact him themselves.
