The Streets of Afghanistan rolls into the Denver Arts Museum on Thursday evening a life-size photography exhibit that takes you to Kabul and some rural roads in the war-torn country.
It is not an official exhibit of the museum. Shannon Galpin of Mountain2Mountain in Colorado rented an event space to present these 40 extraordinary images, which you can see in much smaller format at , where you can also find ticket information. Mountain2Mountain raises funds to help the girls and women of Afghanistan.
“My hope is that we can break some stereotypes and show a different view of Afghanistan and use this exhibit to connect communities and culture,” Galpin says.
Photographers from Afghanistan and the West have joined to make this exhibit a trip, using multimedia effects, kites, street art, music and women in burkas to take you to a place you might never visit.
Denver is the debut for the exhibit, which then moves on to Washington; Telluride; Dallas; Houston; Breckenridge; Philadelphia; New York; Los Angeles; Sonoma, Calif.; and Minneapolis.
Harlem on her mind.
Singer Sheryl Renee is heading back east — but not before she throws herself a send-off party. Renee is hosting a Five Points/Harlem Renaissance Costume Ball at Kimball Hall on May 14.
“We are basically transforming the room back to the ’30s.” Renee says. “The Jazz Impersonation Show has some of our greatest performers. It’s dedicated to the history and the jazz and its connection to Five Points. And it’s my way to say thank you to everybody and having the best party I can have.”
The Facebook posting commands: “Ladies, grab your feather boas, stylish hats, long necklaces, flapper and ’30s and ’40s style dresses — and guys, your brims, zoot & pin-striped suits, fat ties, long chains and let’s have some fun!”
