WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will most likely nominate veteran diplomat Ryan Crocker to be the next United States ambassador to Afghanistan, an administration official said Tuesday.

The move would pair Crocker, a former U.S. ambassador to Iraq, with Gen. David Petraeus, the Afghanistan war commander he worked with closely while the two men were in Iraq during the Bush administration.

Crocker is likely to succeed Karl Eikenberry, a retired Army lieutenant general and the current ambassador, who plans to leave soon, the administration official said. The New York Times
