Berthoud resident Bryce Barker will spend a year on probation but no time in the county jail for an attack on cyclists near his home – an incident surrounded by differing perceptions.

The cyclists he confronted testified during trial that Barker was the aggressor who threatened them and destroyed one of their road bikes with a metal bat.

Barker testified that he felt surrounded by and afraid of the bicyclists, who were angry, and the bat was used only in self-defense. Other witnesses supported bits of each side.

“You totally misperceived the situation,” the 8th Judicial District judge said Tuesday while sentencing Barker for felony menacing and misdemeanor criminal mischief.
