ASPEN, Colo.—Pitkin County officials have approved a $57,000 study on ways to improve air service at the airport in Aspen.

Aspen Daily News reported Wednesday county commissioners approved a plan to conduct market research, analyze passenger demand and conduct meetings with airlines. They hope the plan will keep Sardy Field competitive.

The airport is served by Frontier and United Airlines, but eight other airlines have pulled out over the last 16 years. Airport officials say it’s been difficult to court other airlines and to sell Aspen as a worthwhile market.

They say United has 82 percent of the local market share.

Mead & Hunt, the consulting firm awarded the contract, plans to pitch to airlines that normally wouldn’t consider the Aspen market.
