NFL reporter Mike Klis looks at the players who are getting the most consideration from the Broncos as the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft tonight:
Von Miller
Outside linebacker, Texas A&M
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 246 pounds
Broncos should select him because: They need a strongside linebacker in John Fox’s 4-3 alignment more than a defensive tackle. Miller is the best pass rusher in this draft and the most gifted athlete at a position of need.
Broncos should pass on him because: Because Miller was a defensive end in college, it’s uncertain whether he can drop back and cover.
Marcell Dareus
Defensive tackle, Alabama
Height: 6-3
Weight: 319
Broncos should select him because: Dareus is the biggest of the draft’s top-ranked defensive tackles. He can anchor blockers and penetrate the backfield.
Broncos should pass on him because: For a No. 2 pick, Denver needs a disruptive force, not a gap plugger.
Patrick Peterson
Cornerback, LSU
Height: 6- 1/2
Weight: 219
Broncos should select him because: Peterson is the most gifted athlete in this draft.
Broncos should pass on him because: For a team that may be strapped for cash, it’s not wise to invest $43 million in cornerback Champ Bailey and $65 million in another cornerback.
Nick Fairley
Defensive tackle, Auburn
Height: 6-5
Weight: 296
Broncos should select him because: Fairley is the best pass rusher and run penetrator among players at his position in this draft.
Broncos should pass on him because: He’s a tad light as D-tackles go, which means he can be pushed around by a good running game. There are concerns about his work ethic too.
