EDGEWATER, Colo.—Authorities say a bullet was fired through the window of a portable classroom at a Denver-area high school, narrowly missing a teacher but causing no injuries.

Police in the west Denver suburb of Edgewater say the shot was fired Wednesday at Jefferson High School. Police say they believe the shot was fired from off campus.

No students were in the classroom, but the teacher was grading papers near the window.

Police say the bullet missed the teacher by inches and lodged in a wall.

School officials say most students had no classes Wednesday because juniors were taking the ACT exam.

Jefferson and two nearby schools were initially placed on lockout, meaning no one could leave or enter. Classes at the schools were later canceled for the rest of the day.
