AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.—An Air Force Academy professor serving in Afghanistan has died in an attack.
Academy officials say Maj. Philip Ambard was killed in Kabul Wednesday. Academy and Defense Department officials haven’t said how Ambard died. It isn’t known if he was one of nine Americans killed by an Afghan military pilot at an airport.
The academy says Ambard joined the school’s foreign languages department in December 2003 and spoke fluent French and Spanish. He was scheduled to return to the academy after a 365-day deployment to Afghanistan.
Ambard’s daughter, Air Force 1st Lt. Emily Short, tells The Gazette in Colorado Springs that he was in the Air Force about 25 years. He earned a master’s degree and a doctorate while teaching.
