The Catholic Archdiocese of Denver announces the following Sunday local events commemorating the beatification of Pope John Paul II, an intermediate step toward sainthood, and Divine Mercy Sunday.

Divine Mercy Sunday was a local feast day that John Paul II extended to the entire Catholic Church on April 30, 2000.

Archbishop Charles Chaput will mark the beatification at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception with Masses at 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. He will lead a 5:30 p.m. prayer service at the John Paul II statue at the cathedral’s west corner.

Bishop James Conley will host a beatification party for young adults 6:30-10 p.m. Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1555 Grant St.

The Capuchin Poor Clare nuns will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday and remember Pope John Paul II with a 12:30 p.m. lunch, $5, in the park across from St. Patrick’s Oratory, 3301 Pecos St. Prayerful observances follow at 2-4 p.m.

St. Mary Parish in Aspen will celebrate the pope’s spiritual legacy at 6:30 p.m. at the church, 533 E. Main St.

St. Mary Parish in Littleton will observe Divine Mercy Sunday with 3 p.m. prayer service, 6853. S. Prince St.

St. Thomas More Parish in Centennial will hold a Divine Mercy Sunday celebration at 1:45 p.m. at 8035 S. Quebec St.
