Lakewood police found a couple dead of gunshot wounds in their apartment after the woman called 911 for help saying that her husband had a gun.

Police have not said whether the deaths are the result of murder-suicide, but they aren’t searching for anyone in the case, said Lakewood police spokeswoman Bonnie Martin.

The woman called for help at about 10:37 p.m. on Saturday, Martin said.

Police arriving at The Cape apartment complex on South Reed Court heard a gun shot and “waited for on-duty SWAT to show up, then entered,” said Martin.

Neighbors of the couple, who lived on the second floor at 868 S. Reed, said the two were in their 50s or 60s and were usually quiet.

“I never heard any arguing so I don’t know what has been festering,” said Ken Bolton, who lives in the apartment below.

He said he came home from work on Sunday morning at about 2:30 a.m. to find police and squad cars “all over the place. I said ‘this is not good.'”

Bolton, 52, said he has lived at the address for about a 18 months and that it has been very quiet.

“They were a nice couple,” said a woman who would identify herself only as Elizabeth.

The man did custom home repairs and his wife worked at a medical office, Elizabeth said.

“He would help me out with stuff around (my) house,” she added. The couple was frequently visited by their children and grand children, the neighbor added.

She wasn’t home when the shooting happened.
