Sour ales are a strange animal and something of an acquired taste. This offering from the Lips of Faith series by Colorado’s largest craft brewer is a spectacular experience that will have you challenging your friends to try it. At first blush, it’s a nice-looking beer, a hazy orange-amber with a white head that betrays nothing of the entirely different experience to follow. Its nose is earthy and woody, with an apple-cider note. This ale just explodes in the mouth, with flavors of Granny Smith apple, a bit of pineapple and lemon peel, cedar and an earthy funk. The sourness leaps right out, engaging the salivary glands at the back of the mouth. It’s almost as if it gives you an instant addiction, as the finish of each sip begs another. This should be a tremendous change of pace once the weather (finally) warms up. New Belgium Brewing Co., Fort Collins;
