Incumbent Jeanne Faatz cruised to a third term as District 2 representative, easily overcoming challenger Edward Valdez.

Faatz led Valdez 79 percent to 20 percent in early results Tuesday night.

“It’s very gratifying,” Faatz said. “I’m extremely fond of the people of southwest Denver and I’m pleased that they have entrusted me with their vote.”

Faatz has been representing District 2 since 2003. Faatz said that her first priority is help the city of Denver stay within its means financially.

“I think the fiscal accountability issues are very high on my list of priorities,” Faatz said. “We need to keep the budget under control and look at our spending. I have some ideas for areas where we could make structural changes that do not involve taxes.”

She also wants to increase the availability of basic services and create vibrant neighborhoods to assure a high quality of life and keep families living there.

“I want to keep my district very solid and try to watch out for and prevent problems,” Faatz said. “The budget and the quality of life are what I’m focusing on.”

District 2 encompasses the very southwestern corner of Denver. It stretches from the Marston Reservoir north to West Florida Avenue.

The 43-year southwest Denver resident had previously served in the State House of Representatives for 19 years from 1979 to 1998. She has also had a long teaching career at Denver Public Schools, Cherry Creek Public Schools, Regis University and Metropolitan State College of Denver.

She has also served as president of the Harvey Park Improvement Association and was a member of the state Youth Council, Southwest Family YMCA Board of Advisors and Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan advisory board.
