Mesa State failed to advance as a team to the NCAA Division II women’s golf championships, but the Mavericks’ Kristina Casillas and Jennifer Hilts qualified as individuals with sixth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively, at the Central Regional in St. Paul, Minn.
Mesa State finished fourth in the regional Tuesday after entering the final round in second place. The top three teams — Augustana (S.D.), Concordia-St. Paul and Western New Mexico — advanced to the May 11-14 NCAA championships in Allendale, Mich. Mesa State trailed Western New Mexico by three strokes.
ECAC salutes DU.
The University of Denver’s Bill Tierney was named Eastern College Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse coach of the year for the second straight season. DU junior Mark Matthews was named offensive player of the year and Pioneers freshman goalkeeper Jamie Faus was named rookie of the year.
DU sophomores Chase Carraro and Cameron Flint and senior Jeff Brown joined Matthews on the all- ECAC first team. DU (11-2, 6-0) hosts Ohio State (8-7, 3-3) in the ECAC Tournament semifinals Thursday.
Eagles crush Rush.
The Colorado Eagles broke a 3-3 tie with consecutive third-period goals from Adam Chorneyko, Daymen Rycroft and Dan Sullivan and beat the Rapid City Rush 7-4 in Loveland for a 2-1 lead in the Central Hockey League’s Turner Conference finals. Eagles goalie Andrew Penner made 33 saves.
