The University of Colorado women’s golf team was tied for 18th place Thursday after the first round of the NCAA East Regional at LPGA International’s Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Buffs are tied with Kentucky at 18-over-par 306, 20 strokes behind the leader, Coastal Carolina. Jessica Wallace, Emily Talley and Kristin Coleman each shot 4-over 76s for the Buffs.

• The University of Denver women’s team was in 13th place at the West Regional at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. The Pioneers’ 19-over 307 left them 19 strokes behind the leader, Southern California. DU’s Ellie Givens and Sarah Faller were tied for 17th at 2-over 74, six strokes behind the leader, Erica Popson of Tennessee.

Colorado State’s Brianna Espinoza qualified as an individual and is in a tie for 104th place at 10-over 82.

• Gabe Maier of Wyoming had the first-round lead after a 6-under 65 in the first round of the Mountain West Championship at Omni Tucson National.

Ryan Peterson of Colorado State was tied for second, two strokes behind Maier.

Wyoming and CSU were tied for fourth at 2-over 286, eight strokes behind pacesetter San Diego State.

• Former Colorado Academy golfer Mark Hubbard of San Jose State won the Western Athletic Conference individual championship, defeating Damian Tells of Idaho on the third playoff hole after they finished tied at 4-under 212 at Rio Secco G.C. in Henderson, Nev.

Hallam named DU’s Floyd Theard Award winner.

Sophomore guard Chase Hallam gained the top award Wednesday night at the University of Denver’s men’s basketball banquet. Hallam, from Mesquite, Texas, earned the Floyd M. Theard Jr. Memorial Award presented annually to the player who best displays the qualities of sportsmanship, leadership and scholarship.

Hallam, an all-Sun Belt Conference selection, averaged 34.7 minutes of playing time as the Pioneers went 13-17, 9-7 conference. He was the team’s second-leading scorer at 12.5 points per game.

Coach Joe Scott also announced that senior Kyle Lewis of Denver and junior Alex Pickert of Carmel, Calif., shared the Pioneer Award and freshman Chris Udofia of Irving, Texas, was the season’s best defensive player. Irv Moss, The Denver Post
