There are nine — wait, make that eight — Colorado companies on the Fortune 500 list of the largest U.S. companies released today.

Qwest Communications, listed as the state’s second-largest company and No. 209 nationally, isn’t a company anymore. Its purchase by Monroe, La.-based CenturyLink was completed last month.

Two other Colorado companies on the list — Liberty Media (No. 224) and Liberty Global (No. 255) — are closely related, with controlling ownership by Denver cable and media mogul John Malone. If the two were listed as one, the company would be Colorado’s largest by revenue and No. 126 in Fortune’s annual ranking.

Dish Network weighed in as the state’s biggest corporation and No. 193 nationally, with revenues of $12.4 billion.

DaVita, which moved its headquarters to the Denver area from California in 2009, appeared on the list as a Colorado company for the first time, coming in at No. 359.

Other Colorado companies on the list: Newmont Mining, No. 260; Ball Corp., No. 300; CH2M Hill, No. 422; and Western Union, No. 431.

Last year, seven Colorado companies were on the list. In 2009 there were 11.
