ALBUQUERQUE — A Colorado-based mining company has finished staking 5 square miles of claims around Otero Mesa in far southern New Mexico.

Denver-based Geovic Mining Corp. says initial work indicates the claims have concentrations of rare-earth metals. Geovic has applied to the New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division for an exploratory permit. It also has filed paperwork with the Bureau of Land Management.

Environmentalists, meanwhile, are renewing their push for protections for the 1.2 million-acre region.
