CANON CITY, Colo.—Officials say a lightning caused wildfire in southern Colorado has been contained and crews are now turning their attention to mop up and erosion control.

Officials Thursday say the blaze on national forest land near Wetmore, south of Canon City has burned 495 acres. Some 50 firefighters will remain at the scene over the weekend to patrol and extinguish hot spots with smoke and flame possibly visible within the perimeter of the fire.

The fire that grew Friday at one point forced the evacuation of 40 homes and cabins before a blanket of snow fell over the area.
