GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Pranksters have been posting harmless, sometimes humorous phrases on variable message boards at Grand Junction road projects, but city officials say the messages have turned nasty.

Now the Colorado Department of Transportation has filed a report with the State Patrol, and whoever has been posting the messages could face criminal penalties.

The Daily Sentinel reports the complaint was filed over a message that included a 12-letter obscenity to demand on the sign that English be spoken. The message appeared Thursday night into Friday morning. Thursday was Cinco de Mayo.

Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Nancy Shanks says that given the technology, the person would have had to change the sign on site, not remotely.
