GREELEY, Colo.—Federal officials have issued Powertech USA a new draft permit for an aquifer pump test near where the company hopes to mine uranium in northern Colorado.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had issued a permit in December allowing Powertech to re-inject groundwater from the pump test. The company plans to use the test results to apply for a permit for in-situ uranium mining near Nunn.

The EPA revised the permit for the pump test after a petitioner complained it should have included specific pressure requirements for the reinjection. The agency has scheduled a public hearing on the draft permit June 6 in Nunn.

Powertech USA President Richard Clement tells the Greeley Tribune the company’s main focus remains getting permits for a mine in South Dakota first.
