GREELEY — Seven brave contestants packed spicy peppers into their mouths in an effort to win the jalapeño-eating contest at the Cinco De Mayo celebration Saturday.
Greeley resident Michael Montoya won the contest, downing 45 peppers in eight minutes. Two contestants tied for second with 33 peppers, but Montoya never looked up from his bowl of peppers and never stopped for water.
“I eat them all the time,” said Montoya, whose wife had encouraged him to compete. “You’re not going to win unless you try.”
