Here’s some exciting news: On Monday, Volunteers of America signed Sara Evans as the headliner for Western Fantasy 2011.

The fact that her single “A Little Bit Stronger,” is the current No. 1 on the country charts is a real plus, according to banker Tom Honig, who is chairing the Oct. 22 event with his wife, Dianne.

“Western Fantasy always has first-class entertainment, and with Sara on the top of the charts right now, we’re bound to sell out early,” Honig says.

The theme this year is “Round-up at the VOA Ranch.” and tickets can be purchased online at or by calling Michael James, 720-264-3322.

Rise and shine.

You’ve got to get up pretty early in the morning to support Warren Village. Fortunately for those who aren’t morning people, it’s only once a year.

Each spring, Friends of Warren Village stages its All-Star Breakfast and brings in a sports celebrity to speak to a packed house — at 7:30 a.m.

This year it was Dick Vermeil, one of the most beloved figures in pro football. He spent 15 seasons as a head coach in the National Football League, leading the St. Louis Rams to their first Super Bowl victory and later coaching the Kansas City Chiefs.

The record 700-plus guests had a good chuckle when he observed that the speaking engagement represented “one of the few times I’ve been to Denver and had a good experience,” he joked. “I was 0-in-5 till today.” And they gave him a standing ovation when he announced he was donating his $10,000 appearance fee back to Warren Village for its work on behalf of single-parent families struggling to get back on their feet.

He had plenty of other good things to say, and you can read more about them — and who was there — in my Seen First blog:
